Over the last 20 years, the perils of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV-AIDS in particular, have been seared into the public consciousness. We all know that STDs can be debilitating, life-altering and sometimes life-threatening. Even grade-schoolers speak with some degree of confidence about the terrible manifestations of AIDS and can give at least lip service to the critical role of safe sex.

The number of reported cases of STDs among the under-26 demographic is on the rise. Anecdotal evidence also shows that the lack of candid, medically accurate, socially sensitive and age-appropriate sex education leaves young people guessing - and the result can be that they hide and lie about their sexual engagements and may not be aware when they are in need of advice or treatment.

The systematic failure of sex education renders young people increasingly vulnerable to the consequences of STDs, from HPV and chlamydia to syphilis and HIV.

How you can help

The AFA is launching "Let's Talk About Sex" (LTAS), a vibrant and cutting edge initiative that promotes scientifically accurate and comprehensive sex education to encourage young people to protect their fertility though safe sex. LTAS builds on the indisputable link between sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) and compromised reproductive function. This innovative approach connects the dots between current choices and the possibility of future family.
